The smokejumpers and the Mann Gulch fire
1940

Firefighters began parachuting into country too rough to walk into, training at Missoula. Thirteen died at Mann Gulch in 1949 when a fire blew up behind them, and the foreman survived by lighting a patch of grass and lying down in the ashes, a technique nobody had seen and that is now standard.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
