Landowners taking federal cotton payments began evicting sharecroppers to keep the money, so Owen Whitfield, a Black preacher, organised over a thousand families, Black and white together, to move their bedding and children onto the roadside of Highways 60 and 61 in January where the whole country would drive past. The state cleared them on sanitation grounds within days. It got national coverage and eventually federal housing, and it is one of the few interracial tenant actions of the era.
