The shag comes out of the Ocean Drive pavilions
1945
North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
White teenagers crossed to Black jukes and clubs to hear rhythm and blues they could not get at home, took the dancing back to the Ocean Drive pavilions, and slowed it into a six-count step done on a crowded floor with almost no upper-body movement. The records became beach music and the step became the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984, a culture built directly on segregation and on quietly ignoring it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
