Po' Monkey's, the last of the rural jukes
1963
Merigold, Mississippi
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Willie Seaberry ran a juke out of a sharecropper's shack in the middle of a field for over fifty years, living in the back, opening Thursdays, enforcing a no-sagging-trousers rule and changing suits several times a night. It was among the last of the rural juke joints still operating when he died in 2016. Almost all the others are gone.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
