The Robinson House at Bull Run
1861
Manassas National Battlefield Park, Virginia

James Robinson, known as Gentleman Jim, was born free in 1799, waited tables in a Brentsville tavern until he had saved enough to buy 170 acres on Henry Hill, and had a log house standing on it by the 1840s. He was the third wealthiest free Black man in the county when both battles of Manassas were fought across his fields. He sent his family away and sheltered under a bridge in July 1861, came back to thirteen dead Confederates in his yard, and spent eleven years pursuing the government for damages before Congress voted him 1,249 dollars.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
