The Roanoke Star
1949
Mill Mountain, Roanoke, Virginia

Merchants put up an eighty-eight-foot neon star for the 1949 Christmas season as a shopping advertisement and then could not bring themselves to take it down, so the city adopted it, the nickname Star City followed, and it has burned over the valley ever since. It goes red after a traffic death in the city, which residents read from the interstate without needing to be told. The overlook beneath it is the best view of the Roanoke Valley.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
