The Republic of Indian Stream
1832
Pittsburg, New Hampshire
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A vague clause in the treaty ending the Revolution left a pocket of the far north claimed by both the United States and Britain, so in 1832 the three hundred settlers of Indian Stream declared themselves an independent republic, wrote a constitution, and ran their own courts and militia. It lasted three years, ending after an international incident over an arrested debtor escalated to a one-town invasion of Canada. The area is now Pittsburg, the largest township in New England, and quiet about its imperial period.
