Four loaded barges under tow struck a support column of the Queen Isabella Causeway in the early hours of 15 September 2001, moving at a fifth of a mile an hour. Two 80 foot spans dropped into the Laguna Madre and left a 160 foot gap in the roadway, right beside the highest point of the bridge, where a driver coming up the rise could not see it. Eight people died when their cars went 85 feet into the water.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
