The oldest limestone roundhouse in the country, saved by Walter Payton
1856
Aurora, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Chicago and Aurora Railroad built this ring of limestone stalls in 1856 to turn and service locomotives, and the Burlington kept working out of it until 1974. It then sat empty for twenty years. In 1995 a group led by Walter Payton bought the building and converted it into a restaurant and entertainment complex, which is what kept the oldest surviving limestone roundhouse in the United States from being pulled down. A brewery occupies it now.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
