The North Hollywood Masonic Temple, a Maya pyramid on Tujunga Avenue
1951

Robert Stacy-Judd spent his career arguing that American architects should look to the Maya rather than to Europe, and he built this lodge with a lodge member, John Aleck Murrey, at the end of that career. It went up in 1949 and was finished in 1951, stepped like a temple platform with Art Moderne lines cut into it. The city made it Historic-Cultural Monument 1078 in 2015. The Masons are gone and the NoHo Arts District grew up around it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
