The Nihongo Gakko, all that is left of Tacoma's Japantown
1942
Tacoma, Washington
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
This Japanese language school was one of two dozen running in Washington before the Second World War, teaching the children of a Japantown that filled several blocks south of downtown. In 1942 the federal government removed the city's Japanese American residents to camps. The neighbourhood never reassembled afterwards, and the school building is the main piece of it still standing.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
