The Mount Lowe Railway climbs to a hotel on Echo Mountain
1893
Echo Mountain, Altadena, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Thaddeus Lowe and the engineer David Macpherson opened an electric mountain railway out of Altadena on 4 July 1893, running a cable incline and a trolley line up to Echo Mountain. A seventy room hotel, a chalet, an observatory, car barns and a dance hall stood at the top. A kitchen fire took the hotel in 1900, floods carried off the track, and the line was abandoned in 1938.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
