Douglas Engelbart sat on a stage for ninety minutes and showed a thousand engineers the mouse, the window, hypertext links, version control, and a live video call to a colleague thirty miles away in Menlo Park, all of it working, in 1968, on a machine the size of a room. Most of what was in that hour took another twenty years to reach anyone.
