The Maple Leaf is sunk by a Confederate mine off Mandarin Point

The Union army transport Maple Leaf was steaming back toward Jacksonville before dawn on April 1, 1864 when it struck a Confederate mine and went down in minutes off Mandarin Point. River mud sealed the holds and preserved the baggage of the regiments it had been carrying, and salvage work begun in the 1980s brought up thousands of ordinary soldier possessions in remarkable condition. The wreck was made a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and ranks among the richest Civil War archaeological sites in the country.
