The Lyceum, built by a Quaker schoolmaster for lectures
1839
Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

Benjamin Hallowell, a Quaker who ran a school in Alexandria, pushed for a permanent building where the town could hold lectures and keep a library, and it opened in 1839 in Greek Revival brick recycled from an old chapel. John Quincy Adams was among those who spoke here. The Union army turned it into a hospital during the war. Alexandria bought it in 1969 and runs it as the city's history museum.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
