The Lincoln-Douglas debate at Charleston
1858
Charleston, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The fourth debate, in the county where Lincoln's father and stepmother farmed, and the one his admirers quote least: pressed by Douglas in a hostile crowd, he opened by denying he favoured social or political equality between the races. It is in the record, it is part of the same summer as the moral case he made at Galesburg, and both belong in any honest account of him.
