The Kutztown folk festival
1950
Kutztown, Pennsylvania

The oldest continuously running folklife festival in the country, started by academics who wanted the Pennsylvania German dialect and crafts recorded before the last fluent speakers died. It is also where a good deal of the outside world's idea of the region was formed, the quilts, the hex signs and the food all got their national audience here.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
