The Kanawha County textbook war
1974
Kanawha County, West Virginia
A school board member objected to a new set of language arts textbooks in 1974 and the county came apart: boycotts that emptied the schools, a wildcat strike by miners in sympathy, buses shot at, and dynamite at a school board building. National conservative organisations arrived to help and learned how to run the fight, which is why historians treat a county school board argument as the opening of the modern culture wars.
