The Johnstown Flood
May 31, 1889
Johnstown, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A dam held back a private lake where Pittsburgh steel men fished. It had been lowered, badly patched, and screened to keep the stock in. It gave way and put twenty million tons of water into the valley at forty miles an hour, killing 2,209. It was the new Red Cross's first major relief operation.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
