The John Stevens House and the co-op that founded Mount Vernon

John Stevens led the Industrial Home Association, a cooperative of New York City wage earners who pooled money in the early 1850s to buy Westchester farmland and get out from under Manhattan rents. The lots they bought became Mount Vernon, named for Washington's estate, and Stevens is counted the city's founder. His own farmhouse, raised between 1849 and 1851 with six Doric columns across the porch, still stands.
