The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center, built by the hometown Olympian
2001
East St. Louis, Illinois
Jackie Joyner-Kersee grew up in East St. Louis and won six Olympic medals in the heptathlon and long jump. She started putting money and time back into the city in 1988, and the youth centre that carries her name opened here in 2001 with a gym, labs, a band room and study rooms. The MetroLink stop beside it was named for the centre, which is a rare thing for a transit stop to be named after.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
