The Hotel Oakland becomes an army hospital

The Hotel Oakland opened in 1912 as the city's grand hotel, a Renaissance Revival block on the edge of Chinatown. The Army took it over in 1943 and ran it, and then the Veterans Administration ran it, as a hospital until 1963. It then sat empty for most of two decades before reopening in 1981 as housing for older residents, and it has been on the National Register since 1979.
