The Homestead shelter held migrant children for profit

A former Job Corps site beside the air reserve base was converted in 2016 to hold unaccompanied minors who had crossed the border, closed in 2017, then reactivated in March 2018. At 3,200 beds it was the largest facility of its kind in the country and the only one run for profit, by Comprehensive Health Services under Caliburn International. Around 14,300 minors passed through it before the last children were removed on 3 August 2019. The government was found to have paid 33 million dollars over 46 days for 1,200 beds that stood empty.
