Dade Correctional opened in 1996 outside Florida City and runs a mental health unit for men. On 23 June 2012 Darren Rainey, who had schizophrenia and was months from release, was put in a shower whose water guards controlled from an adjoining room, and was found dead about two hours later with burns over a third of his body. A paramedic recorded the water at 160 degrees. The Miami-Dade state attorney closed the case without charging anyone in 2017 and the state settled with Rainey's family.
