The Homestead Grays Bridge, named for a team the steelworkers started
1936
Homestead, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Homestead Grays began in 1900 as a team of local steelworkers and became one of the dominant clubs in Negro League baseball. On 11 July 2002 the High Level Bridge over the Monongahela was renamed for them. The bridge is itself a first: built in 1936, it was the earliest to use the Wichert truss, a quadrilateral over each support that made the structure statically determinate so its forces could be calculated.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
