The Grotto
1896
University of Notre Dame, Indiana
A one-seventh replica of the cave at Lourdes, built into the hillside behind the basilica out of local fieldstone, with a stone taken from the French original set into it. Candles burn there in every weather, all night, in a climate that does not encourage standing outdoors. It is the part of the campus alumni describe when asked what they miss.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
