The Great Fire that burned the steamboats
1849
Riverfront, St. Louis, Missouri
A fire on the steamer White Cloud got loose from its moorings and took twenty three boats with it, then went ashore and burned fifteen blocks of the business district. Crews blew up buildings with gunpowder to make a break, which worked and killed the fire captain doing it. It happened in the same summer a cholera epidemic killed something like one in ten people in the city.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
