The Glendale Narrows, the stretch of the Los Angeles River concrete would not hold

The flood of 1938 handed the Los Angeles River to the Army Corps of Engineers, which lined most of it in concrete. About eleven miles between Griffith Park and Atwater Village defeated the plan, because groundwater pushes up through the bed hard enough to lift a poured floor. The Corps built the walls and left the bottom in sand and gravel, which is why willows grow mid channel here and herons work the shallows.
