Eero Saarinen won the competition partly by accident, the telegram went to his father Eliel first. A weighted catenary 630 feet high and 630 feet wide, built from both legs at once with a tolerance of one sixty-fourth of an inch at the join. Firefighters sprayed the south leg to cool it so the metal would meet.
