Pennsylvania's northern line, drawn straight, would have left the state with no useful harbour on Lake Erie at all. So in 1792 it bought this wedge of about two hundred thousand acres from the federal government for around seventy five cents an acre, after New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut had all given up their claims to it and the Seneca had been pressed into ceding it. The whole reason Erie is in Pennsylvania is that somebody wanted a port.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
