The East Race
1984
South Bend, Indiana
A nineteenth-century millrace running through downtown was rebuilt with adjustable concrete blocks in its floor, so the city can turn a channel of the St. Joseph River into whitewater rapids and turn them off again. It was the first artificial whitewater course in North America. Kayakers train in it in the middle of the city, a block from the courthouse.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
