Philippi, the first land battle

The first organised land action of the Civil War was a dawn surprise in June 1861 that the northern papers mocked as the Philippi Races because the Confederates ran. One of them, James Hanger, lost a leg to a cannonball, carved himself a hinged replacement while recovering, and founded what became the largest prosthetics company in the world. The covered bridge the troops fought over still carries traffic.
