Rock salt was found under Detroit in 1895, the first company trying to reach it went broke sinking the shaft, and a second one finally hit the seam in 1910. The workings now run about 1,500 acres and roughly a hundred miles of underground roads, some of it directly beneath the Rouge plant and Melvindale. Tanneries and food packers were the first customers. International Salt shut the mine in 1983, a storage company ran tours in it for a few years, and it reopened in the late 1990s to make road salt, which is still what comes up the shaft.
