A post cemetery opened here in 1870 for soldiers who died at the fort. St. Paul residents petitioned Congress in 1937 for a national cemetery, and when the new ground was dedicated in 1939 the remains of 680 soldiers who had served between 1820 and 1939 were moved into it. Land transferred from the Fort Snelling Air Force Station in 1960 and 1961 brought it to its present 436 acres.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
