The Cow Palace opens

A livestock pavilion begun in the Depression, finished as a wartime depot, and then handed a second life as the only room in the Bay Area big enough for everything else. The Republicans nominated Goldwater here in 1964. The Beatles opened their first American tour here that August. The Grateful Dead closed out more than a few years in it.
