In 1916 Waxahachie talked the Detroit Tigers into moving spring training here from Gulfport, and townspeople raised the money for a grandstand at the field they called Jungle Park. The Tigers came back in 1917 and 1918. The Cincinnati Reds took their place in 1919 and went on to beat the Chicago White Sox in the World Series the Black Sox threw. The White Sox themselves trained here in 1921. The park was renamed in 1946 for Paul Richards, the Waxahachie boy who caught in the majors and later managed the White Sox and the Orioles.
