Caltrans planned to buy and demolish nearly 7,000 homes and move up to 21,000 people for the Century Freeway. A 1972 lawsuit stopped the work for years, and the settlement that followed obliged the state to build thousands of replacement homes and to leave a rail line running down the median. The freeway finally opened in 1993 with trains in it, and the four level stack where it crosses the Harbor Freeway is named for Harry Pregerson, the judge who supervised the case for two decades.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
