The Celery Fields
1920
Sarasota, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Drained muckland east of town that grew celery for decades, then failed as farmland and was bought by the county to hold stormwater. The spoil from digging the ponds was piled into a hill, at 75 feet, the highest point in Sarasota County, in a county otherwise at sea level. It is now the best birding site in the region, which nobody planned.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
