The Royal Navy sent armed trawlers to help patrol a coast the United States could not yet cover. HMT Bedfordshire was torpedoed with all hands, and four bodies came ashore here. Islanders buried them in a plot of village ground, and the land is leased to Britain in perpetuity, a Union flag flies over it and the Coast Guard holds a service every May.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
