Cypress Hills National Cemetery, the only national cemetery in New York City

Opened in 1862 to take Union dead, this eighteen acre ground is the only national cemetery inside the five boroughs. More than twenty one thousand people are buried here, including twenty four Medal of Honor recipients, three of whom won the award twice. The plots also hold veterans of the Revolutionary War, the Spanish American War, Korea and Vietnam. New gravesites ran out in 1954.
