The BoRit asbestos piles become a Superfund site
2009
BoRit Asbestos Superfund site, Ambler, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Keasbey and Mattison and its successor Turner and Newall dumped waste on this ground from 1897 to 1962, leaving roughly 1.5 million cubic yards of asbestos material across 32 acres of Ambler, Upper Dublin and Whitpain. The main pile stood about 25 feet high, with a reservoir and a park making up the rest of the site. The EPA added BoRit to the Superfund list in 2009, having listed the older factory ground in 1983. The name comes from Bob Rittenhouse, one of the later owners.
