Keasbey and Mattison make Ambler the asbestos capital of the world
1881
Keasbey and Mattison Company, Ambler, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Henry Keasbey and Richard Mattison founded the firm in 1873 and moved it to Ambler in 1881, where it made asbestos insulation and shingles from fibre railed down from Quebec. Mattison built the housing, the utilities and much of the civic architecture for his workforce and ran Ambler as a company town, which is how he came to be called the asbestos king. By the First World War the borough was being described as the asbestos capital of the world. Turner and Newall bought the company in 1934.
