The Bladensburg dueling grounds, where Stephen Decatur was shot

This strip of ground along Dueling Creek sat just outside the District line, which put it beyond the reach of Washington's police, and congressmen and naval officers came out here to settle quarrels. At least twenty six duels are on record. On the morning of 22 March 1820 Commodore James Barron and Commodore Stephen Decatur fired at each other from eight paces. Barron recovered, and Decatur died two days later.
