Maxton, Robeson County, North Carolina

The Klan announced a rally near Maxton in January 1958 to intimidate Robeson County's Lumbee, and about five hundred armed Lumbee men showed up to it. They shot out the single light bulb, scattered the Klansmen into the swamp, and posed for Life magazine with the abandoned KKK banner. The Klan never held another rally in the county, and the Lumbee celebrate the anniversary every year.
