The Banker ponies

Corolla, North Carolina

Small horses have run loose on these banks for centuries, and DNA links them to Spanish stock, probably put ashore or swum from wrecks during sixteenth-century attempts at settlement. They drink from freshwater seeps they dig themselves and eat marsh grass. Fewer than a hundred remain at Corolla, and feeding one is a fineable offence because it teaches them to approach roads.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
