Orson Squire Fowler spent the 1850s arguing in print that eight sided houses enclosed more space and let in more light, and hundreds of Americans took him at his word. Financier Paul Armour went further than anyone and capped his 1860 octagon with a dome modelled on Bramante's Tempietto in Rome. It is the only fully domed octagonal residence known to exist and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
