The Arcade Building put all of Riverside's shops under one roof

Olmsted and Vaux laid out Riverside in the late 1860s with curving roads and no grid, and their plan called for the village's stores to sit together in a single building rather than string along a street. Frederick Clarke Withers, an associate of the firm, designed this Victorian Gothic block in 1871 with storefronts below and offices and flats above, towers at the corners and four dormers on the roof. It was the first commercial building in Riverside and is counted among the earliest ancestors of the shopping centre. It reached the National Register in 2016.
