The Amistad case
1839
New Haven, Connecticut
Fifty-three Mende captives seized their ship and were taken into custody off Long Island, then jailed in New Haven while the courts decided whether they were property. John Quincy Adams argued their freedom before the Supreme Court at 73 and won. Thirty-five survivors sailed home in 1842.
