The African American Museum of Nassau County
1970
Hempstead, New York
Nassau County's parks department has run a museum of African American art and history on North Franklin Street in Hempstead since 1970, a rare case of a suburban county funding the record of its own Black communities rather than leaving it to a city institution. The galleries run about 6,000 square feet. In 2021 the county renamed it for Joysetta and Julius Pearse, who had directed it for years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
