Six million acres inside a blue line on the map, larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon and the Everglades put together, and the largest protected area in the lower forty-eight. Downstate businessmen backed it because logging the watershed was silting the Erie Canal. Two years later the state wrote into its constitution that the public forest be kept forever wild, which is a stronger protection than any national park has and can only be undone by amendment.
